What is an Elopement?

A Wedding That's Actually About You

An elopement is a small, private wedding — sometimes just the two of you, sometimes with a tiny handful of your closest people. It's legal, it's real, and increasingly it's the choice couples make when they want meaning over performance.

In Wales, elopements have seen a surge in popularity, and it's easy to see why. The landscape is wild, the venues are personal, and the whole country feels like it was made for quiet, romantic moments — rolling hills, ancient woodland, and coastlines that take your breath away.

Nantwen, tucked deep into the Pembrokeshire National Park near Newport, has been hosting elopements and tiny weddings for years. It's discreet, beautifully set, and run by people who genuinely love what they do.

The Venue

Nantwen: A Private Hideaway in the National Park

Set at the end of a long private track, Nantwen is a fully equipped cottage surrounded by open meadows, ancient woodland and the sound of birdsong. The sea and the Preseli Mountains are just moments away.

The cottage sleeps up to five people across three bedrooms, meaning you can bring your children, a parent or two, or your dog (dogs are very welcome at Nantwen — £50 per pet). You'll have the whole place to yourselves.

Nantwen is a completely inclusive venue. Whatever your religion, gender, orientation, age, race or background — you're warmly welcomed here. Every couple, every story, every kind of love deserves a beautiful wedding.

Why Wales?

One of the Most Romantic
Corners of Britain

Pembrokeshire is the only coastal national park in Wales — a landscape of dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, wildflower meadows and ancient hedgerows. When people ask us why they should elope in Wales rather than the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands, we simply show them a photo of Nantwen.

The light here is extraordinary. The pace is slow. And the sense that you've found somewhere genuinely private and special — something that belongs to just you — is real.

How to Book Your Elopement

Planning an elopement at Nantwen is refreshingly simple. Here's how it works:

Step 1 — Choose your dates. Use Nantwen's online booking calendar to check availability and secure your stay. They accept card, bank transfer and instalments.

Step 2 — Book the Registrar. You'll need to arrange a Pembrokeshire Registrar to perform the ceremony. Nantwen provides a direct link to their booking system. If you're marrying within three months, contact the registrar by phone or email directly.

Step 3 — Add your extras. Want a cake? A local florist? A photographer? Nantwen has a curated list of trusted local suppliers to help you build your perfect day.

Step 4 — Just show up. Witnesses are provided. The cottage will be ready. All you have to bring is yourselves — and your excitement.

Note: Nantwen offers viewings only to couples who have already booked their wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

What exactly is included in the elopement price?
Your elopement package includes exclusive use of the Nantwen cottage for your stay, use of the hall and wild grounds for your ceremony, privacy (Nantwen is set at the end of a private track), witnesses for your ceremony, and use of the meadows and woodland for photographs. Additional costs include the Pembrokeshire Registrar and any extras such as catering, flowers or a photographer.
Do we need to bring our own witnesses?
No — for elopements, Nantwen provides witnesses. You and your partner are the only ones who need to be there. It's one less thing to organise, and one of the things that makes Nantwen so uniquely well-suited to true elopements.
Can we have guests, or is it truly just the two of us?
Both options are available. A true elopement means just the two of you (with Nantwen providing witnesses). But if you want a few people present, you can add guests at £26 per person for a 2-hour visit. Nantwen can accommodate up to 30 guests for the ceremony. The cottage itself sleeps up to 5 people in 3 bedrooms, so a handful of guests can even stay overnight.
Is Nantwen LGBTQ+ friendly?
Absolutely and unequivocally yes. Nantwen welcomes everyone, whatever your religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, race, disability, marital status or any other characteristic. They celebrate diversity and are committed to making every wedding inclusive, respectful and memorable.
How far in advance should we book?
As far in advance as possible for popular weekends and the spring/summer season. For weddings within the next three months, you can book Nantwen online but should contact the Registrar by phone or email rather than using their online system. In the unlikely event the Registrar is unavailable, Nantwen will move your booking to another suitable date.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes — dogs are warmly welcomed at Nantwen for a fee of £50 per dog. Given the surrounding meadows and woodland, it's one of the more dog-friendly wedding venues you'll find anywhere in Wales.
Where exactly is Nantwen?
Nantwen is nestled within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, near Newport in West Wales. It sits at the end of a long private track with views over open meadows and a wooded valley. The sea and the Preseli Mountains are both just minutes away — making it the perfect base for a romantic few days either side of your ceremony.
