Throughtout 2025 and 206 The Nantwen Ensemble will perform a special commission from composer David John Roche. The commission gives a platform to those living with Dementia.
David has composed a beautiful piece of music for flexible ensemble that references individuals with Dementia. The references are made through anonymous musical motifs made up by the players. These motifs differ between each performance.. The Nantwen Ensemble will perform this work in a range of community and performance settings throughout 2025 and 2026.
The project will be documented by a film.

Why Dementia?
Dementia is a relevant subject to many of the musicians who work as members of the Nantwen Ensemble. Daniel’s grandfather (on the right) had Alzheimer’s making this project a very personal endeavour.
Everyone has an experience of Dementia and is reflected across society and all demographics with increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with Dementia of some sort.
The Disruption Award from the Dementia Trust has provided a wonderful mechanism to have a creative impetus to engage in conversations about Dementia.
We hope that the resulting composition will have longevity well beyond its first year of performance.
